Keeping close to one’s roots while far away from home can be a challenging balancing act.
Youth born from African immigrant parents will have an opportunity to reconnect to their roots on June 3, thanks to an event at the Embassy of Côte D’Ivoire. The day will be in commemoration of the International Day of the African Child. It has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the OAU Organisation of African Unity.
This initiative is from the Francophone Africans Alliance, a Maryland based organization with the mission to ” serve as an information gateway for Francophones seeking Community Resources likely to facilitate their integration in American society and promote their social mobility.”
Its purpose is “To encourage, strengthen, and sustain the active engagement of Africans, primarily Francophones, in community affairs through information and education.”
The youth present at this event will be introduced to the country’s food, dance and clothing among other things.
